You might be wondering what an online marketing strategist, mom of five, and human fully wrapped up in home renovations is doing writing about video games…

But honestly? It makes perfect sense.
When you’re juggling business, kids, budgets, and a house that feels like it’s permanently under construction, you need something low-cost, low-effort, and genuinely fun to unwind at the end of the day.
For us? That turned into video games. Mostly because Gray was already a gamer.
With most of our belongings packed away for months during renovations, our computers became our main form of entertainment. And while I can only work so many hours before my brain turns to mush, I still love something that makes me think.
Enter: these cozy puzzle games, beginner-friendly single player video games, and surprisingly fun date night games that had me coming back for more.
So if you’re looking for:
A fun video game for couple nights at home
A cozy video game puzzle you can play solo
Beginner-friendly single player video games
Easy, affordable date night games
Or just something other than Netflix and doom scrolling…
Here’s my personal, non-gamer-approved list.
Note: All of these are available on Steam (free to download, games purchased individually). This is not an affiliated post but the images are hyperlinked for your convenience.
If we haven’t met yet, I’m Brittany — a mom of five, home renovation enthusiast, and a business owner who’s all about keeping life real and doable. I know firsthand how messy, beautiful, and overwhelming motherhood can feel, and I share from that space of “in the trenches” right alongside you.
Here, you’ll find encouragement, practical tips, and honest conversations about balancing family, work, and your own sense of self. My hope is that you’ll walk away feeling a little lighter, a little more seen, and a whole lot more equipped to create a life that works for you and your family. Single Player Video Games (That Still Make Great “Watch & Debate” Date Nights)
Blue Prince
If you only try one game from this list… make it this one. I'm OBSESSED!!!! This is probably one of my all time favourite video games.
Blue Prince is technically a single player video game, but Gray watched the entire time because the storyline is that good. It’s a mix of exploration, strategy, and video game puzzle mechanics.
You inherit a mysterious house from your uncle who has challenged you to make it to his inner sanctum. The twist? The map resets every day. You rebuild it each time as you explore. It sounds frustrating. It’s not. It’s addictive. We logged 36 hours and I still want to go back to finish mini-quests because it has a storyline that you're very quickly drawn into and want to see what happens next.
Beginner friendly? Yes — but give it a little time to understand the mechanics of how the different rooms appear in the house. Pro tip: keep a notebook nearby.
Is This Seat Taken?
This one feels like mini brainteasers with a cute storyline. You seat little shapes on public transit based on their preferences (some smell, some hate loud music… honestly relatable). It’s light, clever, and a great brain break.
Perfect if you want:
A low-commitment video game puzzle
Something to play over lunch
A cozy solo unwind moment
It's very easy to pick up but can really get you thinking on some of the harder levels when you're navigating a lot of different 'requests' from your shapes. I also love that you can downloaded the free demo before purchasing. After playing the demo I decided I wanted to purchase the full game, and actually got it in a Steam bundle with Tiny Bookshop, another game I loved.
Tiny Bookshop
Cozy. Calm. Zero pressure. I played this over the Christmas holidays this year, it was exactly what I needed to decompress after long days of activities, gatherings and being sick.
You play as the owner of a mobile bookshop in a new town, recommending books, and build relationships with locals. My six-year-old even joined me for this one (with a little reading help). It’s gentle and creative — and honestly such a sweet decompression game with adorable graphics.
You can download the free demo before purchasing, and if you're into reading like me, you'll recognize a lot of the books and may even leave with a to-read list after playing based on some of the titles I saw in the game that sound really cool.
Killer Frequency
You’re a radio host turned emergency dispatcher after an incident at the police station. Your goal: trying to save townspeople from the clutches of a serial killer while also trying to figure out who the killer is.
In this game, choices matter. People can… die (I lost 4–5. Oops.). If you can't save someone, it doesn't make you start over, thankfully, but it will impact the storyline later in the game which was cool to see.
It’s short (a few hours), immersive, and feels like a choose-your-own-adventure escape room. Solid 6/10 for me, not likely one I will go back to but I still enjoyed playing it and it only required a medium amount of brain power to save people (it's multiple choice style).
Dorfromantik
If you love board games like Carcassonne, this one is for you.
It’s peaceful tile placement strategy with beautiful artwork. Rounds last 15–45 minutes (there is a quick mode if you don't have a lot of time) and it’s great when you want something soothing. It's one I'll come back to so I can test out different tile placement strategies to try and earn different in game achievements.
If you like this definitely check out Mini Motorways because they have a similar chill vibe.
Mini Motorways
In this game you design roads for a growing city and try to keep traffic flowing smoothly to collect trip points.
It’s strategic without being overwhelming. You can play for 15 minutes or get completely sucked in. With elements like highways, traffic lights, bridges and more there are so many elements that make each round unique and a large variety of different cities you can unlock to play in for endless hours of fun. Gray enjoyed watching me play, it was very relaxing.
Mini Motorways is the perfect casual single player video game. If you enjoy playing you can also check out Mini Subway, the original game from this developer.
Chicory: A Colorful Tale
This one technically can be played co-op, but I’m including it in the solo category because it’s such a sweet, low-pressure experience if you’re playing on your own.
In Chicory, you step into the role of the wielder of a magical paintbrush — the person responsible for bringing colour back into the world. When darkness starts creeping into your town, it’s up to you to explore, solve light environmental puzzles, and quite literally repaint everything around you.
What I love about this as a beginner-friendly single player video game is that there’s no rush. You can move through the storyline at your own pace, or just enjoy filling the world with colour. The girls (ages 6 and 5) were able to play pretty independently, which says a lot about the accessibility and difficulty level.
If you’re looking for something creative, cozy, and a little different from a traditional video game puzzle, this is such a fun option.
20 Small Mazes
This was such a pleasant surprise — and it’s free, which makes it even better.
20 Small Mazes is designed to be a short puzzle experience, and we beat it in under an hour and a half. It’s technically a solo game, but like most good video game puzzle experiences, it’s extra fun when you have someone nearby to bounce ideas off of.
Each maze is completely different. Some are visual illusions, some play with perspective, and a few had us staring at the screen for way longer than we’d like to admit. It’s not your typical “find the exit” maze — it’s clever, creative, and occasionally humbling in the best way. If you want a quick, satisfying single player video game that doesn’t require a huge time commitment, this is an easy one to try. And since there’s no required order for the puzzles, you can skip around if one stumps you.
Bonus: If you love this one, the same creator also made Strange Jigsaws — which we upgraded to for a proper date night challenge.
Escape Simulator
If you love escape rooms, this is one of the best video game puzzle experiences I’ve tried solo.
There are multiple room themes with 5 rooms in each theme giving you lots of variety and opportunities to practise your escape skills. The levels are challenging but not impossible. And yes, there’s a sequel and one with a spy theme which we will be playing in the future.
The Best Video Game for Couple Date Nights
If you’re looking for the best video game for couple evenings at home, ones that we can pick up and play without needing to spend time learning complicated game mechanics etc. These are our favourites so far, in no particular order:
The Room Series (1–4)
These are escape room style games with challenging puzzles and an ongoing storyline from game to game. You can technically play solo, but we found it way more fun together. We’d pass the controls back and forth and debate solutions as we went needing both of our heads to solve from of the puzzles.
Each game seems to take 2–4 hours to escape the 4-5 different rooms in each game — perfectly structured for date night games without staying up until 2am. You can purchase the games individually or as a bundle which I recommend if you like escape room games.
Strange Jigsaws
Created by the same person as 20 Small Mazes (which is free), but this one is much more complex. This one truly felt like a proper video game for couples because we needed both brains working. It took us about 2.5 hours.
And yes — solving it makes you feel wildly intelligent.
The Witness
100% puzzle based. Technically single player, but I absolutely would not have finished this alone. Gray and I saw patterns differently, which made it ideal as one of our favourite video games for couples. It took us about 24 hours total (over multiple nights), it was one of the longer games that we played because we did a lot of the side puzzles. This was a 8/10 for me.
Pro tip: if you get stuck, leave the area. The “tutorial” for that puzzle type might be elsewhere.
Overcooked (and Overcooked 2)
Seeing as Grayson and I both met while working in a restaurant we might have a soft spot for games that bring back that nostalgia but truthfully they are excellent games.
You play as chefs on a mission from the king traveling to different lands to rid the realm of zombie bread. In each area you play in different kitchen layouts crafting food to feed everyone before they storm out hungry. Each new kitchen presents different challenges for you to work around making each game exciting and chaotic while you communicate with your partner and try to stay out of each others way, much like cooking in a real kitchen can feel like.
It’s fun, frantic, and surprisingly strategic, a good 7/10 for me and I just found out there's a sequel (Overcooked 2) so I've added it to our to-play list for a future date night.
Jackbox Party Packs
If you’re looking for low-effort, high-laugh date night games, Jackbox is such an easy win.
These are technically party games, but there are several that work surprisingly well as video games for couples — especially if you love trivia, inside jokes, or playful competition. The best part? Only one of you needs to own the game. The other player joins on their phone, which makes setup ridiculously simple.
Some of our favourite 2-player options:
Fibbage – Bluff your way through trivia by inventing believable fake answers. It’s half intelligence, half knowing how your partner thinks.
Trivia Murder Party – Dark humour meets trivia. Competitive but hilarious.
Drawful – Bad drawings + wild guesses = chaos in the best way.
These are perfect if you want something light, funny, and not overly strategic. They also double as great double date night games if you ever want to invite friends over (or play virtually).
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime
This one is such a nostalgic throwback for me from my university days — and I still think it’s one of the most fun cooperative video games for couples.
You and your partner control a neon spaceship while navigating space, defeating enemies, and rescuing adorable little creatures. The catch? You don’t each control the whole ship. You have to physically run around inside it to manage different stations — steering, shields, weapons, lasers — while chaos unfolds around you.
It’s colourful, fast-paced, and requires real communication. You quickly learn who’s better at steering and who should probably not be trusted with the laser cannon. 😅
I originally played with 3–4 people, which makes it easier, but it absolutely works as a two-player date night game. It’s collaborative rather than competitive, which makes it a great choice if you want something energetic without feeling like you’re battling each other. If you love teamwork-style video games for couples that are playful but still a little challenging, this one is such a fun pick.
PlateUp!
Similar to Overcooked but with a more realistic restaurant management experience. You stay in the same restaurant, earn upgrades daily, and try to survive as long as possible as you add new and more difficult items to your menu. I like the subtly strategy element of the game figuring out what dishes you can make without overwhelming yourself in the kitchen causing you to lose the game. It's a fun one you'll keep coming back to, we've played it multiple times and loved every minute of it.
This is one of the best date night games if you like co-operative game, and you can also play up to 4 players for double date night fun!
Unrailed!
You’re building tracks in real time while the train keeps moving, you goal, get the train to the next station. Play independently or for more fun with up to 4 players. You'll need to divide responsibilities, and really communicate so you don't let the engine overheat or run out of tracks.
When you successfully get your train to the next station you'll get to choose from different upgrades to make the track building process easier but don't forget that with each stop you make your train starts to move faster and faster and the only way to slow it down is to get a new engine and move into a different area.
We still haven’t beaten it — but we keep coming back, and we have even played with our oldest two kiddos who love this one as well.
Stardew Valley
If cozy farming is your thing, this is it. it reminds me of playing Harvest Moon on my DS when I was in high school. While similar to Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley offers a co-op mode which is perfect for date nights and why it made the list.
You'll work together to grow crops, mine, fish, build relationships with the locals all while doing projects for the spirits to refresh the community centre… and yes, you can romance your partner in-game too which is kinda fun.
This one is more of a long-term investment, its good for hours and hours of fun over multiple date nights, but it’s one of the most relaxing video games for couples out there and if you haven't tried it yet you should.
Honourable Mentions of Video Game Puzzle That We're For Me
There were a few other games we tested out that I didn't love (they were like 4 or 5/10 for us) but would be decent games for other gamers or if you finish all of these and need more ideas:
Braid – Interesting story but with tricky controls. Gray faired better than me playing and was able to beat it in just a few hours.
Rusty Lake Hotel – Escape room vibes, lots of point-and-click with limited instructions so you really have to use your brain.
Islanders – Similar to Mini Motorways but not as strong in my opinion.
Feed All Monsters – Great for kids, I didn't feel overly challenged (at least not in the levels I played) but the graphics were cute and if I didn't want anything too complex I might go back to this one.
Whispers in the West – Murder mystery, but felt slow for me. It does have a co-op option which might make it better. I attempted to play solo and then had Gray watch and we were both frustrated by the lack of instructions.
Final Thoughts: Why Video Games Became Our Go-To Date Night
If you’d told me a few years ago that I’d be recommending a video game for couple date nights at home… I probably would have laughed.
But here’s the thing:
They’re affordable
You can play after the kids go to bed
No babysitter required
No leaving the house
Still mentally engaging
And honestly? Way more connecting than scrolling beside each other on the couch
If you’re looking for:
Beginner-friendly single player video games
A clever video game puzzle
Easy and affordable date night games
Or fun video games for couples to break up the Netflix cycle
And if you try any of these? Message me. I genuinely want to know what you think — especially if you save more townspeople than I did in Killer Frequency. 😅 And if you have game recommendations for us to try I would love to add a few more to my list, it looks like most of 2026 is going to be at home date nights for us.
