St. Patrick's Day

March 15, 2021|Mom Tips

Luck of the Irish

Do you celebrate every holiday? I'm part Irish (a little ways back our family tree) and since I'm not a big drinker it wasn't until I had kids that I really started to celebrate. And by celebrate I mean dress up and take pictures. There are a lot of holidays in a calendar year and if I had professional pictures taken at all of them it would cost me a small fortune. Here are a few of my suggestions to create cute St. Patrick's Day pictures at home without breaking the bank.

The first thing I do is start with the outfit. I choose a background and decorations that compliment the outfit I've picked. I got matching outfits for the girls this year, I picked up the onesies at Giant Tiger (check your local store because I couldn't find them online) and the tutus from Dollarama so each outfit was less than $10. If you'd rather shop online and have the outfits delivered you can check out some cute outfits on my Amazon Storefront (note, I make money for any purchases made through my storefront). I also have low cost suggestions for photography 'equipment' that will make like easier, especially if you're taking pictures of kids, you can view them here.

Picture tip: ensure that your decorations are level with your photo subject. Place decorations 1-2 feet off the floor when taking pictures of kids.

Once you've determined your outfit(s) you need props. I always recommend visiting your local dollar stores because they are overflowing with cost effective items than can easily be used as photo props but I do have a few amazon suggestions on my storefront. I wanted to keep it simple so this is what I picked up:

  • Shamrock garland

  • Shamrock felt stickers

  • Gold coins

  • St. Patrick's headbands and a hat

My backdrop was far from creative but there are a lot of simple and inexpensive ideas you can replicate. Check out my Pinterest board for inspiration. Below are a few of my favourites.

What you need:

  • Pool noodles (red, green, blue and purple)

  • Shamrock decorations

  • Gold coins or balls

  • Twine/string to attach pool noodles

  • St. Patrick's hat

What you need:

  • Tule or table cloths in red, orange, blue and purple, green optional

  • Fake snow or a white blanket

  • gold coins

  • St. Patrick's hat

What you need:

  • Paper shamrocks

  • Gold coins

  • St. Patrick's hat

  • Green bow

What you need:

  • Large transparent bowl

  • Lucky Charm cereal (1-2 boxes)

  • Transparent pitcher

  • Milk

  • St. Patrick's headband

Here are a few more pictures that I liked from our photoshoot.
