The sun is shining, and I can feel my productivity flowing in. If you’re like me, you are ready to put your business out there on social media but might need a little push to get the creativity train flowing. Here are a few ideas you can weave into your already awesome social media plan for May to give it an extra boost of individuality for your brand.
Any Time in May Ideas
Mental Health Awareness Month – being an entrepreneur is H-A-R-D hard, let’s normalize it and share tips on how your products support mental health or how you as an individual carve out time to fill your cup and what you do when you have time. It’s time to ditch hustle culture and bringing awareness to not working 24-7 365 is the first step.
National Bike Month – this is an American awareness topic BUT if you have customers/clients in the US, you should play off their days too. Consider sharing your bike-to-work plans for May or ask your audience to share their favourite local bike paths and send out a compilation at the end of the month so that when people travel, they know what trails to check out in each area.
Get Caught Reading Month – you know this is right up my alley, I’m an avid reader! This idea is super easy to incorporate as a post or even story content. Share what you’re currently reading and what you’ve learned from the book and encourage your audience to share their favourite reads to build your book list for the rest of 2023.
National Photography Month – time to upgrade your branding pictures and gather new social media images! Reach out to a local photographer and book a session, share it in your stories and let everyone know how fun it is being an entrepreneur! P.S. my photographer, Olympia Photography and Design still have availability this month, DM to book!
National Small Business Week (April 30 – May 6) – this is a great week to shout out your favourite small businesses to support or share how people can support yours. I also like sharing my journey as a celebration of how far I've come.
National Nurses Week (May 6 – 12) – are you a registered nurse? Share an about you post and talk about why you love what you do!
Ideas for Every Day of the Month
May 1: Global Love Day – this is a great day to share a testimonial from a happy client and appreciate them for supporting your business.
May 2: National Teacher's Day – everyone online is a teacher, share a tip, trick or tutorial for your audience.
May 3: Garden Meditation Day – get outside for some fresh air and call it your work day by tackling your spring gardening to create a before and after carousel or reel for social media.
May 4: Star Wars Day – May the fourth be with you! Ask your followers if they're on the light side or the ark side with a this or that game in your stories.
May 5: Cinco de Mayo – share your favourite Mexican recipe.
May 6: Join Hands Day – collaborate with a local business and offer your audience a giveaway, piece of advice, blog or podcast. Collaborations are an amazing way to grow your business and provide value outside of your area of expertise.
May 7: World Laughter Day – all jokes aside 😅 share something funny today or a story about a time you laughed so hard you cried.
May 8: No Socks Day – it’s time to bring out our summer footwear (and book in for a pedicure 💅), create a reel of your summer footwear collection or post a reminder about the health benefits of going outside barefoot to connect with nature.
May 9: Sleepover Day – share your favourite sleepover activities or create a fun Toy Story inspired post about what your products do at night while you’re sleeping.
May 10: Donate A Day’s Wages to Charity Day – what is your favourite charity to support, and why are you so passionate about it? If you can’t donate a day’s wages, share about how to support the charity, maybe book a day to volunteer or start a fundraiser and ask your followers to contribute.
May 11: Make A Book Day – not all of us are authors but we all write! If you’ve created downloadable resources (lead magnets or freebies) for your email marketing, it’s a great time to remind new followers where they can go to get them. If you are an author then humbly brag about it, it’s a huge accomplishment, congratulations!
May 12: Military Spouse Appreciation Day – if you have a veteran or first responder discount this is a great time to share about it or run a special this day only to appreciate their service.
May 13: Dog Mom’s Day – I don’t think you need ideas for this one 😉
May 13: Stay Up All Night Day – keep an eye on my socials, I might be sharing an audio clip that would be perfect for you to talk about something that keeps you up at night in your business so you can debunk a myth or faux pax in your industry.
May 14: Mother’s Day – many people will share about their amazing moms or run a sale which is lovely! You can also get creative and share about what you love being a mom and entrepreneur or how you balance motherhood and running a business. Maybe you just want to shout out a few of your favourite momtrepreneurs in your stories that day, there are so many ways you can celebrate Mother’s Day on socials!
May 15: International Day of Families – if you’re a family business, share how it got started or why you love working with your family. It’s also a great time to shout out the people who support you behind the scenes and thank them for contributing to your thriving business.
May 16: Biographers Day – It’s about me post time! I recommend you introduce yourself every quarter on social media for your new followers and this is the perfect reminder.
May 17: International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia – breaking stereotypes and creating a culture of acceptance is so important.
May 18: Global Accessibility Awareness Day – what do you do to make your product or service accessible for all?
May 19: Endangered Species Day – be silly and share about not letting small businesses become endangered species. Create a post that reminds people supporting small businesses is free by liking, commenting, sharing posts etc.
May 20: Be A Millionaire Day – Not all entrepreneurs and small business owners are in business to be millionaires, but we do need to make money so have some fun with it and share a post asking your audience to comment on what they would do if they won the lottery or became a millionaire.
May 21: International Tea Day – share your go-to tea blend or drop a truth bomb and “spill the tea” on something about your business that may surprise people.
May 21: World Baking Day – this is a great day to share a behind-the-scenes post about how you create your product or share a recipe with your audience.
May 22: Sherlock Holmes Day – “A mystery is afoot!”, share a puzzle or challenge you had to overcome when you started your business or ask your audience for help with something you’re currently working on. It’s also a great day to share tips/reminders of how your product or service can “solve the puzzle” your customers and clients face.
May 23: National Drinking with Chicken Day - … okay, I’ve got nothing for this one. If you have an idea leave a comment for me and share it!
May 24: International Tiara Day – create a post shouting out the team members, suppliers, customers etc. that support your business. A little appreciation goes a long way.
May 25: Geek Pride Day – we’re all a little geeky, help your audience get to know you and share what you geek out over and see who shares the same interests as you.
May 26: Title Track Day – what’s the title track of your business? Share the most popular product or service you offer. Bonus points if you include a testimonial from a happy client to back up how awesome you are.
May 27: Cellophane Tape Day – We’re all a hot mess some days, get vulnerable and share what you’re struggling with in your business and what’s taping you together. This could be a person, product/service or mental health coping technique.
May 28: Amnesty International Day – if it’s relevant to your business, share how people can be more resources or information on this topic.
May 29: International Everest Day – what great heights have you seen in your business? Share the story of why you’re so proud of this climb.
May 30: Water a Flower Day – what project are you watering right now and how can your followers help it grow?
May 31: Web Designer Day – direct your followers to check out your website because you’re proud of what you’ve built or credit the designer/developer who created it for you. This would be a great time to use a call to action like “visit my website to download my __ freebie”.
The key is to only use these dates if they make sense for your business or relate to your personally because you are your business and it’s important to let your audience get to know you as well.
